Hello, everyone. I just wanted to inform everyone that my wife, Munchenruth, is to have her broken tooth extracted tomorrow (Tuesday 8/15/11) . There was a cancellation, thankfully, so we get to go a day early. She has never been under nitrous oxide before and if it affects her the same way high levels of narcotics do; she will be anxious, scared, and aggressive. The last time any gas was used on her in this lifetime, she was 4, going into ear surgery, and ripped the mask off of her face and made them give her the anesthetic through an IV. Obviously, 'gas' and tight objects on her face don't do her any favors. Please think good thoughts, pray if you do, etc. for her tomorrow. She already has problems with dentists and a mean gag reflex (what got her in this situation in the first place).

Wishing you the best Muchenruth!
Also, if you can, you might try asking for a xanax before any procedures. I think these are pretty cheap and make the whole process (especially gag reflex issues) manageable! It can be used with other sedation methods like nitrous or just on its own. I would totally recommend it; it should be offered at any dentist office!

I have kept Munchenruth in my thoughts regarding her entire dental ordeal, so I certainly hope that everything went okay for her. I personally hate when people throw prescription meds around casually, so I certainly would not use Xanax....even for a dental visit - which I am absolutely TERRIFIED of. They could certainly hit me over the head with a pan beforehand though! I wouldn't mind that! LOL! Sincerely, Laurasia

Yeah, I see what you mean, Laurasia. Xanax is offered as a one time thing (as it is easily addictive and isn't meant to be taken long term for any reason) and they provide it to help people who are anxious get through the door and sit through their appointments, especially if these people are nervous about other sedation methods like nitrous oxide.
I've never had nitrous and I'm kind of scared to, but I was given the xanax to help me come and be IV sedated for my wisdom teeth extraction, and boy did it help!
