I don't know what got me started on this...but I'm on here doing research with regards to myself and started to read this stuff about German names. I came across one site that said about my name actually being Heinrich-Gunther Prien (rather than Gunther-Heinrich Prien). This forum brings up the issue in the last post: www.u47.org/u47forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=39Now after typing this I checked a few web sources and came across one on a message board that stated that Prien's name was actually Prien Heinrich Gunther . so if this is true then his first name was indeed Heinrich but he had underscored Gunther as the name he wished to be known as. This still does not solve the whole riddle as why most if not near all sources have only Gunther. On the Axis History forum it is mentioned: forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?p=543545In my U-Boat Site I have my name in the HSO list as it was posted on U-Boat.net (Gunther-Heinrich Prien).

I have been looking into names too. In my case there is a suggestion that Reinhard was originally called Reinhardt, but that he dropped the T. I think that is probably the case.

That's interesting...and could well be. That's why I posted this - to discuss changes to German names.

Hi Prien. I wouldn't worry too much over whether Prien's "first name" was Heinrich or Gunther. Many people prefer to go by their middle name rather than their actual "first name". That's one of the things a person needs to look out for when doing genealogical research too. Hi SS3. Are you serious?! That is too funny as I have often caught myself adding the "t" to the end of Reinhard's name & needing to correct myself. LOL! Sincerely, Laurasia

Well I will be changing my name legally and so I wanted to read more on this. I always referred to myself as Gunther anyway - even when I had an Out of Body Experience, there was a woman there who called out to me by using my name (Gunther) rather than Heinrich.
I think my friend brought up something about that too - the middle name vs. first name thing. Since I will be changing my name though, I really want to sit and think about how I want to do this.

Hi Prien. Hey if you are drawn to use Gunther as your first name & you preferred to be referred to by that name back then, than there isn't much issue is there? Something funny regarding names is that I have always loved the name Johannes (even naming a pet rat Johannes when I was a teenager), as has Miss Bothmann. When I became aware of having been Hans I figured that was where my draw to the name had come from since Hans is a nickname for Johannes (even though Hans' given name was Hans & not the longer Johannes). There was an amusing twist in all of this though...I have recently found out that Hans' middle name may have indeed been Johannes. Making his given name Hans Johannes Bothmann. When I told Miss Bothmann this she immediately broke out in laughter saying "Your name was Hans Hans!" Sincerely, Laurasia

I guess not - I originally was going to go with Gunther Prien (as that is how it is plastered all over the four corners of the Earth) - but I had always felt like I was 'missing' some part of me until I got the rest of my name. Due to how things regarding names are treated here in the U.S. - I will go with Gunther-Heinrich Prien. That's a nice name 'Johannes'. Have you been able to obtain any more information though (historical records)?

Hi Prien. I think that Gunther-Heinrich is the right way to go for you. That's what you have always seemed to like afterall. No I haven't found any "historical documents", just instances where he is referred to as having the full name "Hans Johannes". Sincerely, Laurasia

It 'feels' right having it done that way (aside from sounding better ;p ) Oh that's interesting - it'd be neat if you did come across something though!
