I don't mean to come off as harsh - but what is the point and purpose of such a thing?
My own feelings is that such a 'gadget' really shouldn't be on any type of spiritual board. There is just something about 'smiting' and 'exalting' someone that 'rubs me the wrong way'.
One of the things that came to mind is someone 'passive-aggressively' taking out their 'grievances' on someone by constantly 'smiting' them.
May want to considering removing said 'gadget'.
With Respect

I kind of agree with that; I've always found it a silly feature. I sometimes like it as a way to tip truly good posts, but I never use it anyway!
In any case, I believe this is a built in feature to proboards, so I'm not sure it's removable. Although, it could be, I'm not sure.

I've never used it either and admittedly find it a bit 'off putting' in a place that's to be about healing.
I don't think it is a built in feature as the U-Boat Society's forum is proboards-based and it certainly isn't there! *laughs*

Oh, is that so? Ok, I wasn't sure about that! I know I've seen it on a lot of forums and just assumed it was built in...

I really do not have a problem with it considering that there is no abuse of any kind tolerated on this site. It is just an extra little feature that some people see as either a cutesy thing or just an addition for fun. However, that does not mean that everyone has to employ it. Simply ignore it and do not use it either way. If any of you do happen to notice abuse of the feature, then I am sure Laurasia would consider removing it. Just consider it a feature of the site that is optional.

I just wanted to bring it up because I had noticed that not long after Laurasia posted a reply to my Memories thread, which I then replied to, it went down from 3 to 2 - so that had made me wonder about some things going on.
I'm no stranger to immature 'passive-aggressive' games played via the internet - I know that I may sound 'touchy feely' regarding this, but having dealt with such immaturity - that is why I felt the need to bring it up.
If people are talking about something that is 'sensitive' to them or very much a part of them - they shouldn't be 'smited'. They shouldn't have to deal with either 'exaltation' or 'smite'.
Just my zwei pfennig.

I totally agree with you on that. I would never feel the need to 'smite' someone over something that is obviously deeply personal to them. In fact, I have never 'smited' anyone on any forum I don't think. *laughs* I pretty much use it the way Iseke does...for a really good post that has benefited others or the site as a whole. I also use the karma button to exalt someone who has been personally helping others...essentially everything that this forum is about. You are right..some people play the pettiest games on the internet...because they are cowards and do not have to face the one they are targeting. I have found it best to just ignore whatever people try to goad me with.

Thanks for understanding my concern. I've ignored it until I saw it go down after something being discussed in my Memories thread and that's the only reason why I brought it up now. Too many things connected...

The karma feature is an addition that comes built into ProBoards sites (though it can be removed as Prien mentioned). The terms "exalt" & "smite" are simply what was built into the program. It is meant to be used as mentioned by Iseke & Miss Bothmann... if you want to use the feature (as mentioned, most people simply ignore it) & you feel that someone has made a good contribution to the site, has helped another member exceptionally, or something else along those lines you can choose to exalt them. Conversely if you feel that someone has done something bad for the site, has behaved inappropriately towards another member, or something else along those lines you can choose to smite them instead. That all being said, obvious abuse of the feature (meaning that you notice the every time a person logs in they smite your account) will be dealt with just as any other abuse on the forum would be. Just because your account gets smited once in a while does not constitute abuse though. I would take it that someone simply did not like something that you have said or done & leave it at that. We are entitled to our opinions after all. I understand that there are people who feel the need to play petty child-like games, this is true in every aspect of our lives both online & offline. We also shouldn't expect to get along with everyone that we meet either. Disagreements do need to be dealt with appropriately though. We are not in highschool (intellectually at least ) & should not conduct ourselves as though we are. If there are members abusing the karma feature then I will deal with them individually. Sincerely, Laurasia
