When you look at how desperately people of that place and era proceeded to falsify documents, it's not surprising that such a thing would happen. They can consider themselves lucky that they both discovered the same thing. How much marital bliss would there be if only ONE of them were Jewish? (That would sort of be akin to discovering that my ex, the previously snooty British officer, had actually been Kommandant of Treblinka.)

Let me get this right, and please correct me if I'm wrong: They were Neo-Nazis, THEN found out that they had Jewish ancestry, THEN decided to practice Judaism...excuse me...ORTHODOX Judaism?
Hmm...they STILL sound like the assholes they used to be. How convenient that they suddenly want to embrace their roots. It shows the ignorance and danger in believing that Judaism is an ethnicity; it's a religion. There is absolutely nothing at all wrong with converting to Judaism, but in my opinion, they are acting like this is some kind of free-pass to become Jewish, and to me, that's just as stupid as being a Neo-Nazi...if you like the religion, convert! But come on, don't say that you suddenly found out that you were "Jewish all along."

Ironic, yes. That they have decided to practice orthodox Judaism makes me believe that their superiority complexities are still very much intact though. Not that I think there is anything wrong with orthodox Judaism in & of itself, but I expect that their version of "orthodox Judaism" is going to be more like fundamentalism. They've probably dropped one prejudice to adopt another based on a skewed version of Judaism.
I hope not. Perhaps they have truly learned a hell of a lesson & will understand Judaism properly, but having switched from one opposing view to another so quickly....I don't know.
Sincerely, Laurasia

Laurasia, YES if they have that kind of mindset to begin with... then they will twist the religion around too. Lovely couple that they are

I don't buy for a second that they even care about Judaism. To suddenly become religious Jews, and to join a congregation after the discovery of having Jewish roots- sounds dirty and hypocritical since they were hardcore neo-Nazis. It would not surprise me if they spewed out fundamentalist type of attitudes later on. People don't change that quickly, usually. Under exceptional circumstances perhaps but this to me, is not. From what I have read about them, they sound like trash to me anyway.

Exactly! I feel like it is a matter of trading one "addiction" for another; if they are extremists, they will probably be happy, you know?

I would not care to be a fundamentalist myself, of any particular religion; however I would stop short of criticising those who are.

I openly criticize fundies; all they are about is thinking that they are better than everyone else, indoctrination, and oppression. Frankly, people who oppress people are awful, and fundies sometimes inflict possibly irreversible emotional and psychological damage on their children. A good read is the blog "Razin' Ruth;" this woman escaped from her quiverfull fundie family and talks about how she is trying to make it on her own outside of the confines of her familiar (in this case, familiar meaning of the family) world.

I can't help but question why anyone would have a soft spot for fundamentalists. McCoy, why is it that you are defending them? They are obnoxious, instill fear into you, and are extremely closed minded. To be frank, they scare me.

Misquoted, since when did I say I was "defending" them? That sounds remarkably Marxist-Leninist, you're either for us or against us, on one side of the barricades or another. The fact I don't criticise another's religion is simple, that way they don't have the right to criticise mine.

Saying that the argument is "Marxist-Leninist" is a bit over the top: I'm not saying that it is a one side of the fence or the other, I'm saying that people who are oppressive are dicks, and that has no connection to communism. That has absolutely nothing to do with their religion, that's ALL personality.
Even though you don't do anything to cause them to criticize your religion, most still will! Fundies have a penchant for ridiculing anything or anyone who is not just like them.

Seems to me like they're doing it to 'save face' in a sense.

Excuse me, McCoy? I knew it. You are a fundamentalist. If that is the case, what are you doing on a forum like this? You are right. I cannot stand fundies. They are paranoid, dirty and narrow-minded cowards. Here is a Marxist-Leninist comment from me to you- take a hike! Because I am against you, not for you.
