If you ever trip over articles about the Russians, you'll notice a number of people evince a longing for the "good old days", and even a nostalgia for Stalin. Life was secure, except if you were trotted off to Siberia, everyone had a job and no one was homeless, everyone had health care, well what there was of it.

I really don't see any of this as a huge surprise. Nowhere in the western world is democracy running well, in most places it's akin to a V8 motor only firing on 3 cylinders. Pretty much everywhere in the so called developed world, galloping McDonaldization destroys real jobs, creates McJobs. Have we ever in history seen the number of homeless we do now? The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Now the Germans are an interesting case in point, with all that hyper prosperity post WW2. Six weeks vacation in Spain or Sri Lanka and all those new cars. It's no wonder people ask, where did it go?
In Germany's case you can add to all of this a growing discontent with the European Union, whose HQ in Brussels steadily seizes more and more power from national governments. Even to the point that a so called nation in the EU has less autonomy than a Canadian province or an American state. With the EU continuing on as it is, soon governments will be little more than enforcers of the parking regs. Do you want a good example of this? Any government wishing to aid an industry to the tune of 500,000 euros or more must clear it with Brussels. Can you, in your wildest dreams, imagine Harper or Obama having to live with rules like that?

It's surprising to me that Russians would be longing for the "good old days" when Stalin caused the death of so many prolitariates by starving them. Besides that, it's getting so far into the future that even the little kids from the days of Hitler's reign are now elderly, so it is likely that the people being polled have absolutely no concept of what it was actually like back then, unless they have past life memories about the time. Sure, the economy got better under Hitler, but there was also rampant sexism, as women were pretty much told that they were to be baby mills and I'm sure with the modern German "we were all on vacation, nothing happened between the years of 1939 and 1945" attitude, many don't take that into account. My point is, they have NO idea what that was like and these people are talking out of their butts.

Switzerland was not a dictator-run country in the 1950s-1970s, and it was wonderful. Everyone had jobs, Günther did not have a college degree and I did not even graduate high school for obvious reasons, yet we both had jobs and lived a very comfortable lifestyle. This economic mess, in my opinion, is in large part due to inflation and expectations of education being way too high. People need to realize that the world needs people who will not thrive in school, yet still be able to work, and things cost way too much these days. We bought our house for I think...$9,000 in 1946, and there was no debt. People are far too greedy and the world and the economy has changed...no "fuhrer" can change that.

I've been to Russia, and that is -totally- true. People still worship Lenin there, it's crazy.

If these people were around during the rise of the Third Reich, I bet they would think twice. Most of them would anyway, except for the twisted ones.

Has anyone else hear read about Merkel's statements on the multi-culti in Germany...and that book by that one guy?

I'd like to get an English copy of it just to see what he says...I'm sure it'd be an interesting read.
