To my knowledge, Freud never used the word "Thanatos". However, in "Beyond the Pleasure Principle", he described the dark drives leading to self-destructive behavior.
In the work environment, I know a pastlife nazi, whose three flaws have added up to career suicide, made her unpromotable. Which is a real shame, as she is very intelligent otherwise.
1. In an environment where people by and large detest any meeting, even a concise one, she is excessively long-winded at meetings.
2. She has a position of leadership in a group doing S&M Sadism and Masochism group activities. (it's the modern day, who cares?) Well, often on Mondays she brings in photos to show off to her little circle of admirers. (again, long as she keeps it quiet, who cares?) Well, she feels a need to talk so loudly (showing off), that everyone in that area of Cubicle Village hears. Now to some folks, that's just part of the entertainment floating around.
However, she has created some deadly serious enemies. A clique of a half dozen family-oriented women takes it upon themselves to do the Et Tu Brutus thing to her on any and all available opportunities.
3. She often shows up in attire more suitable for her group than for an office.
Now, I find it hard not to laugh, when in all earnestness, she tells me how people in her area hate her (go figure).
Oh well, she's not mine to administer, Gott sei danke.
Logical question: why has management declined to step on her? Answer: she occupies a specialty no one else wants to do.
Now, if you're well read in the psy field, I know your next question, so I'll save you the effort: in your story telling, I detect a person with considerable involvement in Schadenfreude, right?
Well yes and no.
Schadenfreude is essentially the opiate of the powerless. That is, a real sadist wants to actually originate the suffering of others. The Schadenfreude addict refuses to actually cause any, but derives pleasure from what fate itself produces.
It got started with me in childhood, with a dysfunctional family, how would it not?
I ended up in a career where there were bushel baskets of it lying around. Indulge to your heart's content, day after day, and there's still plenty more there for you.
And then, two years ago, I woke up one morning to discover it had gone, totally vanished, never to return. In its place it left a quiet disgust and despair at what the human condition is, an attitude Schopenhauer would have heartily approved of.
I simply cannot find any valid reason in western psy why something like that would vanish that fast and that totally, as opposed to fading away.
Which means the explanation is probably spiritual. The powers that be pumped me full of methadone, so to speak, said enough is enough, time to move on.
Oh well, my new attitude is much more in keeping with being a proper Buddhist, so I guess I can't complain.
