Consider "The Kindly Ones", by Jonathan Littell, the English version came out March 2009. I admit to not having read it, only the French original "Les Bienveillantes"; however, reviewers say it is indeed a very professional translation. You can of course get book reviews anywhere so don't consider this that. Think of an analogy, now before going on a tropical trip, you need vaccination. You are given a choice of one giant bicycle pump needle (LOL) or coming back a dozen times for small needles. I'd pick the former, just get it out of the way. And so it is with this book, it's worth any other dozen books combined in historical content of the era. The author spent five years researching it, according to an interview on the French CBC website and only four months writing it (?). For what it's worth I have only once seen a novel that well and meticulously researched; that is Vikram Seth's "A Suitable Boy", some 1,400 pages, took 8 years overall. This is done to the same exacting standard. Some reviewers feel the sex content is a bit overdone. I would tend to agree but still say it's mostly germane to the story. The author can be a bit irritating with that soooo cultural tone in those dialogues, but hey nobody is perfect.

Hhmmm, it sounds as though the author probably has a past life from the era. Sincerely, Laurasia
